As for the cabinets, yes I agree paint them white.
As much as I hate microwave hoods, it does save space, so the plan is to install one in the empty space above stove as there needs to be some cooking ventilation (by code). I agree, but not sure it's in budget to add cabinets unless I can somehow repurpose the one over the sink? Otherwise, I was going to put some sort of cabinet/console to the left of the fridge for more storage and an landing for the fridge. A couple of you mentioned framing in the fridge. ) Yes, the fridge is currently in an awkward place, it is being moved to the LEFT of the door (door is to master bedroom, believe it or not!), to the 'mirrored' wall (mirror removed this morning).
They are a discerning bunch, but I do need to reign myself in, at least for now. I should also mention that this place is a rental (within walking distance of a major university) and I anticipate renting to university grad students/faculty/staff.
